The intoxicating scent of fresh-baked bread dances out the doors of Montana Gold Bread Co., wafting through the parking lot and into the street, just as it’s done for the past 25 years. Perched at the very top of Carytown, Montana Gold, founded by Rich and Sher Lahvic, celebrated its 25th anniversary this past weekend – on St. Patrick’s Day to be precise.

What started in 1994 as a small, family-owned bakery offering a handful of bread has grown and expanded, adding cookies, muffins, sandwiches, as well as boxed lunches and catering – perfect for company events. Step into the bakery at any given time and row upon row of perfectly formed loaves will be cooling behind the counter upon which an assortment of cookies and muffins tempt guests. A new display case houses tubs of pimento cheese – made using Sher’s mother’s recipe, as well as flavored butter, bread pudding, and lemon bars.

This past May brought perhaps the biggest addition when they enclosed a former patio to create Café Montana, providing guests an oft-requested spot to linger a little longer over sandwiches, Rostov’s Coffee, or one of Montana Gold’s jumbo-sized, perfectly squishy, freshly made cookies. A wall in the new dining room also features a collection of McClutcheon's preserves, dressings, honey, and other toppings that pair perfectly with baked goods.

A selection of just over a dozen types of bread is made daily – including the perennial favorite, Cinnamon Swirl (Pro-Tip: use this bread to make French Toast) as well as classics like Challah, Honey Whole Wheat, Hearty White, and Montana 9 Grain. Specialty and seasonal bread such as Jalapeno Cornbread, Cheddar Garlic, Pumpkin, and of course, given their St. Patrick’s Day anniversary, Irish Soda Bread, rotate through the menu.

The open exhibition style bakery offers guests a peek behind the breadmaking scenes. Everything at the bakery is made from scratch using all-natural ingredients – they even mill their wheat in-house using a Stone Burr Mill. The proof is in the taste and samples are readily available for guests to taste the pillowy softness for themselves.
